Notes on Clothes

  • Clothing changes over time as styles evolve and develop. This can be driven by a number of factors, including: market demand, material development and availability, political intervention (rules and regulations), corporate or business influence, popular trends, beliefs or morals, religious doctrine, class distinctions, technology, and any particular requirements for use or application.
  • In your narrative world, think of the implications of class structure, politics, and various influences in shaping clothing. In ancient Rome for example, certain classes were not allowed to wear certain styles. In the future, color coding could indicate levels of importance in work wear. In a medieval fantasy world, particular heraldic symbols or color combinations could come into play. In a contemporary junior high school, think of the style and brand requirements to fit in to a particular society.
  • Geography and climate can play a role in the types of clothing worn, obviously. Hot sun equals full body, light coverings. What coverings will your characters need in order to survive the coldest nights of the winter?
